Before & After: Kitchen Relocation

Design

Throughout the life of a townhouse, layouts can become outdated and less than optimal for modern living. In this Cobble Hill home, conversion from a two-family to a one-family home was ideal to reprogram the space and allot adequate square footage to each of the main living areas.

The original kitchen in this Cobble Hill townhouse was located at the rear of the garden floor.

The space felt crowded and dark and did not receive much natural light. We moved the kitchen up to the more central parlor floor, converting the old kitchen into a den with large sliding glass doors.

The new kitchen on the parlor floor was previously the living and dining area.

Moving the kitchen upstairs made it more functional for the family with the dining space toward the rear and formal living room at the front. Enlarged façade openings and new glazed doors bring natural light into the space.

We converted this house from a multifamily to a single-family home, allowing us to remove the rear fire escape. This allowed us to design an elevated deck off the kitchen, improving the home's access to the backyard from multiple levels.
